you right now with the bulk of the action up to the north. even if you are not covered we could still have spotty sprinkles or drizzle. as far as temperatures this is the key change. warmer than yesterday at this time. temperatures right now basically matching yesterday's high. santa rosa 44 degrees. oakland 48. san jose 47 degrees. as far as shower chances here we are 10:00 this morning and we do bring in the chance but this forecast model really brings in more rain later on into the evening hours. we'll highlight that the forecast and the monday morning commute. president obama will travel to newtown, connecticut today to attend a memorial service for the victim's of friday's deadly elementary school shooting. the president will meet those families of those who were lost and thank first responders. he also plans to speak at a vigil scheduled for 4:00 p.m. pacific time at newtown high school. this will be the fourth time president obama has traveled to a city after a mass shooting.

>> we now know the names of the 26 people including the 20 children who were killed when a man opened fire inside sandy hook elementary school. among them 30-year-old lauren russeau she always dreamedover being a teacher. emily parker was one of 16 sicks that were only six years old. her father said she liked to draw and make cards to cheer up friends and family. >> she was the type of person that could light up the room. she always had something kind to say about anybody. >> robbie parker also delivered a message to the shooters family expressing condolences for the difficulty time they are going through too. >> no case compares to the

carnage at sandy hook elementary. all of the students dc all of the victims were shot several times. one of the teachers natalee hammond survived. the gunman fired at least 30 round magazines and investigators say he used a long weapon likely a semi automatic rifle. >> i've been at this for a third of a century. and it's my sensibilities may not be the average man. but this is probably the worst i have seen. >> they do not belief the victims suffered for an extended amount of time. >> out of tragedy comes hope and comfort. people have gone to newtown to pay their respects and offer solace. john sue sockeye is there this morning. john.

>> reporter: the emotions here in sandy hook connecticut are still incredibly raw. one family came here to this memorial to bring a jack in the box for jack pinto. another woman we met is a second grade teacher at a nearby school and she was particularly moved by a card left by a child at that memorial. >> to all my friends my name is tryst ten. i'm six years old from ps1-15 queens new york. i feel very sad about everything. i don't understand why somebody would do this to little kids like us. i'll miss you all love tristen.

>> there is a boy named jack on the victim's list we don't know him personally but he could have been our son. >> reporter: this was a big vigil last night in virginia ford which is about 40 minutes from sandy hook. hundreds gathered to remember the victims especially -- once she realized there was a gunman at her school she hid her students in closets and cabinets. when he arrived she told him the kids were in the gym he shot her and left all those kids were saved. coming up in the next hour we will talk to a pennsylvania commissioner county commissioner from pennsylvania who drove here last night to bring his messages of support from his community to sandy hook. live in sandy hook, connecticut i'm john sasaki. >> sandy hook teacher katelyn is being created with helping save the lives of her 14 students. her mother is speaking out about what he did to keep them

safe. >> she told all the kids to get in the bathroom. she shut her door. she turned off the lights. she tried to block the bathroom door a little bit. and she just stayed in there and asked them to be quiet. she had to do this to save herself and those kids. >> the 29-year-old teacher did not let anyone out of that bathroom until police slid their badges underneath the door to identify themselves. throughout the newscast we will pay attribute to the lives lost in newton. you will see photos of teachers, staff, and students. lives lost but not forgotten. >> the bay area has opened their hearts for the victims of the newtown. allie rasmus joins us from st. mary's cathedral. >> reporter: that national tragedy will with be a topic of discussion across the bay area.

we are outside st. mary's cathedral in san francisco just about five minutes ago they opened the doors for a small 7:30 service that will begin here. they expect people to come in and seek solace and prayer and try to make sense of what happened in connecticut. across town at grace cathedral the bishop there posted a statement on the mass shooting saying in part quote we know we must look at, wrestle with, understand and confront the root cause of the mass shooting that are occurring with greater and greater frequency across the country. i am the diocese of california stand in prayer with the diocese of connecticut as we seek to absorb unspeakable sorrow. throughout the weekend vigils have been held here in the bay area to remember the victims of the connecticut shooting. this one you're looking at happened in the excel sciarids district. back out here live the doors are open to st. mary's cathedral in san francisco for their organ and canter service

that will start at 7:30. coming up we will try to go in and speak to the pastor about his plans for the service today. live in san francisco allie rasmus ktvu channel 2 news. we will turn now to other news. new this morning i want to tell you about a rescue along the side of a by area freeway that happened after a couple crashed their car. that car veered off interstate 880 around 1:30 this morning. it got tangled up in bushes and trees along the fence line. investigators still don't know what went wrong. >> witness described the vehicle suddenly looking as if exiting the freeway. >> police say the car hit the fence at full freeway speed. we don't know the extent of the injuries but authorities say the woman inside that car was able to talk to police. however, the man who was driving suffered a head injury and was not able to communicate with his rescuers. it was a wet and soggy saturday. more rain is on the way for the next few days. the storm also brought cold

temperatures to many parts of the bay. and holiday shoppers had to pull out their umbrellas, hats, and coats. san jose workers at an emergency shelter say dozens of people filled their beds because of the cold weather. the rain also caused delays up to 50 minutes at sfo. the wet weather is expected to stick around through tuesday. it's pretty chilly outside right now as well too. our mark tamayo is here to give us a sense of what is ahead in the next coming hours and into the week as well. >> that is right. today we have the possibility of a few showers but completely different than yesterday. we'll have more opportunities to be outside with some more breaks in the action. right now in fact just lots of cloud cover out there and reports of drizzle out toward the oakland airport. that is a neat shot. you can see the fog hugging the hills. and then you can pick out the mid to upper level clouds paying us a visit. live storm tracker two. you pick out the overcast be not much in the way of significant rainfall. even if you are not covered you could have a few sprinkles.

we are bringing you just a few of the pictures of the connecticut school shooting victims. all of these adults and young children described as loving and caring and the light of their family's lives. police investigators said the dead gunman left no note and now authorities are trying to piece together why he did it. those who knew adam lanza described him as a loner. he did not seem to feel emotional or physical pain. they were told he had asperger syndrome. he lived with his mother her family has offered their sympathies to the community. >> the whole family is traumatized by this event.

very sad. very sad. >> it's not clear why adam lanza targeted sandy hook elementary. he attended the school as a boy but contrary to earlier reports his mother nancy had not taught there. nan say lanza is described as a gun enthusiast who took her sons to shooting ranges. he shot and killed nancy with one of her five guns and took three of her weapons into the school. all of the guns were registered. >> people said in the bay area -- teamed up with a group called youth uprising and a private donor to offer $200 per gun. no names or questions asked. >> what inspired me really is the incident that just took place in connecticut as well as my own son was murdered so i just want to help out. >> i've never seen the outcry and involvement from the community like this.

>> the same scene played out in san francisco the gun buyback program was so successful organizers are hoping to expand the program statewide. >> there is a major break in the case of two teenage girls shot and killed in oakland. sources with the oakland police department tell ktvu news investigators have arrested three people in connection with the double homicide. best friends 15-year-old rakell and 16-year-old bobby were gunned down on november 25th near brooke dale park. one of the suspects confessed to the killings. they are still speaking with possible witnesses but say they are not searching for any additional suspects. a man is in custody on suspicion of domestic violence after a long standoff in san francisco. it happened last night on nob hill. near hide street. officers responded to reports of a domestic dispute but they kept their distance when they determined the suspect might have a weapon. after about four hours the man

surrendered peacefully to authorities. >> well, i stopped there and went to another place to eat. but i didn't know this was going to happen. >> streets reopened at about 11:00 last night without any reports of injuries. the case remains under investigation. investigators say wet weather was not a factor in a deadly crash that briefly shut down interstate 280. that crash happened just before 12:30 yesterday afternoon. the cause of the two-car crash still under investigation. the driver who died was the only person inside one of the vehicles. authorities say three people in the other car were not hurt. we have more information on a fatal motorcycle crash that took the life of an off duty highway patrol officer in solano county. the 38-year-old officer who's name is not being released live in napa. the crash happened when a pickup truck turned left to cross jimson canyon road. the driver of that pickup said

he saw the officer approaching and tried to move out of the way but the motorcycle clipped the back of his truck and the officer died at the scene. the department of defense says sergeant michael guillory was killed on friday when his vehicle crashed. he served with the first marine special operations battalion. he was a nine-year veteran of the marine corp. his mother back in louisiana said he loved being a marine. this week the bay area is honoring gill already reand all those died in the line of service. vets from the civil war to the war in afghanistan are buried at the cemetery. there was a special reunion at last night's jazz game in

and we wants to update you now on a story we first reported yesterday here on mornings on 2. oakland police have arrested two people in connection to a quadruple shooting. it happened around this time yesterday morning between 84th and 85th avenues. officers found three men shot. a woman that was also hurt was dropped off at the hospital. they are all expected to recover. a teenage boy remains in critical shooting after getting involved in a drive by. police say four men in a car opened fire on the teen. the teen victim was able to walk about a block to san francisco general hospital. no arrests have been made in the case. bad news for businesses looking to move to san francisco. the city has seen the largest leap in office space costs world-wide. a new report says occupancy costs which include rent, local taxes, and service charges jumped 36.4% in downtown san francisco in the last year.

the cost rose to $90 per square foot. and if you live in the 415 getting a new phone number could mean changing area codes. the california public utility commission says there are not enough number combinations left and a new area code is necessary. a new 628 area code will be given to residents and businesses that get new numbers sometime in 2015. public hearings on the issue are scheduled to begin next year. the city of san rafael plans to continue talks tomorrow on a sports complex. it would be located 160 feet from the san rafael airport. more than 150 supporters spoke at a council meeting earlier this month. they are expected to get a report tomorrow about questions brought up during that meeting. the list of concerns include airport safety lights, a recent plane crash near the proposed site and rising sea levels.

can still have spotty drizzle or a few sprinkles out there. the bulk of the activity is up to the north. here is the latest imagery and you will notice still quite a bit of cloud cover and the little green dots indicating sprinkle and moving across the bay area. as far as the winter storm warning this begins at 6:00 this evening and lasting through monday night. snow levels coming down about 4,000 feet. this will be a significant snow producer. our next system for the sierra. temperatures this afternoon mainly in the 50s with the chance of a spotty shower. but a lot more breaks compared to yesterday at this time. much more of an opportunity to head out for today. there is another storm on the way. just in time for tonight and into monday morning as that system develops. first up in the north bay tonight. chance of a light shower for tuesday. the biggest deal by tuesday night into wednesday will be

we're also hearing stories of courage, educators who risked their own lives to save those students. a quiet new england town is grieving this weekend as they continue to search for answers. >> i'm also a teacher and i can't even imagine going through what she went through. >> reporter: sarah says her friend victoria soto a first grade teacher apparently died trying to protect her students. the names and ages of six adults and 20 children ages six and seven were released on saturday. one of those children is is six- year-old emily parker. >> my daughter emily would be one of the first ones to be standing and giving her love and support to all those victims. >> reporter: robbie parker describes his daughter as bright, creative, and loving. also offering advice. >> as we move on from what happened here, what happened to so many people, let it not turn

into something that defines us. but something that inspires us to be better, to be more compassionate, and more humble people. >> reporter: connecticut governor dan malloy echoed these sentiments. >> there be time for discussion of public policy issues surrounding yesterday's events. but what is important right now is love, courage, and compassion. >> reporter: today president obama will meet with the families who lost loved ones and thank first responders. >> as a nation, we have endured far too many of these tragedies in the last few years. >> reporter: while the president will be speaking at an interface vigil later on this evening, 7:00 eastern time, and we're also hearing from the family of the shooter. the father of the shooter. putting out a statement expressing his grief for the victim's families and also saying he too is in disbelief

asking the question why. back to you. >> we know many people are going to church we see them here in the bay area. of course they are in connecticut. do you find that it's getting more difficult as we get to know the victims and we see their faces in the pictures or that people are finding comfort in just coming together right now? >> reporter: absolutely. i think that is the comfort a lot of these people here in this community are feeling because at least they know that as hard as this may be especially when you see the names and the anales of the victims, they are as far as the young children go six and seven years old when you search the faces and names it's difficult but they are all banding together with relatively big turnout at this vigil tonight. it was this huge turnout at a vigil just a couple of days ago here. more than a thousand people

came out. but the support is something that is needed. they even have grief counseling available to anybody in the community who may need it. they are not used to this tragedy here. in the past ten years they have seen one homicide. this is very new for this community. >> ren marsh thank you for reporting. >> throughout the weekend the bay area has shown its solidarity for those in newtown. people showed their sympathies yesterday for the victim's of the elementary school shooting. san francisco supervisor john avalos and city sheriff ross mirkarimi were among those showing support. >> hopefully they can feel the energy that we have brought here because even on a rainy day we are here as a community to say we support the community over there. >> the group also discussed gun control. calling for much stricter laws on a national level. in a few minutes we will go

live to san francisco st. mary's cathedral with a service beginning on there this morning. stay with ktvu for continuing coverage we'll bring you the latest details as they emerge in connecticut on air and online and on our mobile apps. south bay authorities have arrested a teenager in connection to a bomb threat that shut down two students if classes at month vista high and lincoln elementary were canceled on thursday. sheriff deputies and bomb tracking dogs searched school grounds but didn't find anything. just a day of that -- police arrested 42-year-old marco at fashion island mall yesterday. that all happened around 4:30 in the afternoon after suspect allegedly shot about 50 shots in the parking lot. police arrived on the scene and nobody was hurt but he has been

booked on charges with assault where a deadly weapon. authorities sent in a robot to search that suspects car. police decided to use that robot after the suspect told him he did have more ammunition in his car. secretary of state hillary clinton will not testify at a hearing this week about september benghazi attack in libya. following a concussion she sustained last week. the state department says clinton passed out and hit her head after being dehydrated from a stomach virus. she was expected to testify this thursday before congressional committees investigating to the deadly benghazi attacks on four americans. the house chairwoman made it clear she plans to ask women to testify at a different time. john kerry appears to be the next nominee to become the u.s. secretary of state. reportedly president obama will announce his nomination in the coming weeks. word of kerry's selection comes days after the previous front

runner u.n. ambassador susan rice withdrew her name from consideration. if the nomination is confirmed by the senate, the 69-year-old would replace hillary clinton who plans to step down soon. voters are heading to the polys to find out who will be the country's seventh prime minister in six years. the member is likely to be the next prime minister. tsunami politics likely to play a role in this nomination. people in fiji are bracing themselves for cyclone e van. the storm already ripped through the city moe a area. four people are dead. eight are missing in samoa. it's expected to pass north of fiji today and intensify to a category four or five tonight. fiji has imposed a mandatory curfew for tonight it will last

until tomorrow morning. rescuers in marin county are being created for saving a driver who plunged off a cliff. the 77-year-old drove his mini van after the side of muir woods road. no one could see him from the road. he was injured but shouted for help and a group of hikers on a nearby trail heard him and called 911. >> the hikers were very good. they stuck around for awhile. they actually asked before they left do you need anything else from us? they did a wonderful job. >> crews cut back brush with chain saws to pull the man up the hill and out of the ravine. the driver was very cold and suffered hip and arm pain but said to be recovering at marin general hospital. authorities are trying to figure out what caused a small plane to crash in eastern nevada. that plane went down about 19 miles south of eli yesterday morning. it was headed from mesa, arizona to portland oregon. two people were on board.

no other details about the crash have been released. this week city leaders will consider a proposal to ban surveillance drones. it would establish a no drone zone in berkeley. supporters are worried the aircraft could be used to spy on residents. this comes a week after alameda county tabled a proposal by the sheriffs department to spend more than $31,000 from a grant on a surveillance drone. and on this sunday morning bay area church goers are coming together to pray for the families for the victims in connecticut. allie rasmus is at st. mary's cathedral in san francisco where the shootings are expected to be the subject of sermons today. >> reporter: st. mary's coo need real here in san francisco just opened its doors about 30 minutes egg. they have a brief service that is going on right now. it started about ten minutes ago. and the pastor led the congregates inside in prayer in attribute remembering the victims of the connecticut

shooting. we did have a chance to speak to the pastor very briefly. but he did mention that he is going to be mentioning and making attribute to the victims of the connecticut shootings at all their services and masses scheduled for today. now inside the church they have set up a small memorial dedicated to the victims. we have seen a number of people stop by and say a prayer in front of the candle they set up there. they have noticed more people coming in to pray on their own. filing into their church. drifting in and out since friday's shooting seeking solace in light of this tragedy. the service is going on right now. you can see more people making their way in and out of st. mary's cathedral. we have been invited by the pastor to listen into that service. we will be going in short while from now. we'll bring that for you in the next hour. live in san francisco allie rasmus ktvu channel 2 news. time now is 7:41. it was a rainy day yesterday.

since 2000 most city employees have agrowed to a 10% salary and benefit cut. last year the city and firefighters were unable to agree on a contract change. dispute between hospital administrators and nurses union is at the heart of a suspected strike. the walkoff will happen at nine hospitals. nurses and x-ray technicians represented by the california nurses association will start the one-day strike on christmas eve. they are upset about staffing levels, het benefits, and sick days. the body of a new that took a prank phone call at the hospital treating kate middleton is now in her native india. she will be taken to an indian church for mass and then to a catholic cemetery for burial. you are looking at video of the memorial service held for her in the uk on friday. she hanged herself on december 7th after being duped by two australian radio dj's pretending to be queen elizabeth and prince charles.

police shot and killed a gunman after he opened fire inside a hospital preponderate it happened saturday morning at the st. vincent hot in birmingham. he began shooting as police came off an else i have tar on the hospital -- elevator on the hospital's fifth floor. they are still trying to figure out why that gunman was in the hospital. with christmas almost a week away, many people have already put up their christmas trees. now local fire departments are warning people of possible dangers. this morning san francisco city leaders and the fire chief will be at the st. francis memorial hospital burn center to talk about the risk of tree fires. from 2006 to 2010 fire departments nation-wide responded to an average of 230 house fires each year that were started by a burning christmas tree. tomorrow is traditionally the busiest mailing deof the year but the u.s. postal service is helping them get a

ram pain president obama is going to travel to newtown, connecticut today to attend a memorial service for the victim's of friday's deadly school shooting. the president plans to meet with the families that were lost. this is going to be the fourth time president obama has traveled to a city after a mass shooting. john sasaki is live for us in newtown where a memorial has been set up for the victims. john. >> reporter: we are in sandy hook. this is one of the primary places people are coming to pay their respects to the people who were lost in this tragedy two days ago. but just up the hill if you want to take a look up there, that is where you see the folks walking up the street, that is the route people are taking to actually walk up toward the school and toward the fire house. that area is actually blocked off by the state police. nobody can drive up there expect for emergency personnel and residents that live up

there. people still want to walk up there and get as close as they can to pay as many respects as they can to all the folks up there including the firefighters in that volunteer fire house. here this is really the primary folks people are coming and bringing flowers as you can see they are lighting candles. they are bringing teddy bears. hanging various things on the christmas trees that are here as well. and earlier we did talk to a father who brought his six-year- old son and the rest of the family here. he actually is not from this town, but a couple towns over and at first he was very shaken by what happened because he didn't know what school it was. he realized it was the school here in newtown. not his son's school. but it still shook him up very, very much. >> it's like i don't have any words to say. i cried for almost a day. and you look into all those kids the same age as my son. it can happen to anyone. >> reporter: and this is the

newspaper today. the headline says it all. newtown asks why? that is what all these people are doing. they are crying, they are tearing up, and they still cannot understand how something like this could ever possibly happen. here or really anywhere else. live in sandy hook i'm john sasaki ktvu channel 2 news. >> and we now know the names of the 26 people including the 20 children who were killed when the man opened fire inside sandy hook elementary school. among them 30-year-old lauren russeau the family tells the press she always dreamed of becoming a teacher. grace mcdonald was seven years old. her family called her the love and light of their lives. emily parker was one of the 16 victims who were just all of just six years old. her father says she loved to draw and make cards to cheer up her friends and her family. >> she was the type of person

that could light up a room. she always had something kind to say about anybody. >> robbie parker also delivered a message to the shooter's family expressing condolences for the difficult time they must be going through as well. emily's family is raising money now so they can take her to utah to be buried. meantime we're also hearing stories of heroism from that tragic day. coming up at 8:15 how one teacher used her instinct and intellect to save more than a dozen school children. people across the bay area are showing their support for the people who lost their loved ones in the shooting. and ktvu reporter allie rasmus is live right now at st. mary's cathedral in san francisco with more on a special service to honor the victims. allie. >> reporter: st. mary's cathedral opened its doors around 7:00 this morning. the service is just wrapping up now. this is one of their regularly

scheduled services. it's one that is dedicated specifically to the victim's of the connecticut shooting. but the pastor did lead the congregates inside in a moment of prayer. he mentioned and paid attribute to the victims of the shooting. we talked to him briefly before the service began. he said he is planning on mentioning the victims and incorporating that into the services. now inside the church, they have also set up a small memorial dedicated to the victims of the connecticut shooting. there is a wreath off to a side. a candle that is it will. and a prayer to guide people who want to come by and say a prayer. we did see a number of people stop by in and take a moment. they have noticed more people coming in to pray on their own since friday's shooting. across town at grace cathedral the bishop there posted a statement on the mass shooting. saying we know we must look at, wrestle with, understand, and

confront the root causes of the mass shootings that are occurring with greater and greater frequency across the country. he goes on to say i am the diocese of california stand in bare with the diocese in connecticut as we seek to absorb this unspeakable tragedy. it will be a topic of discussion not just at this church but across different faith and different places of worship for these sunday morning services. >> stay william ktvu for continuing -- and stay with ktvu for continuing coverage. we are going to bring you the latest details as they emerge from connecticut on air, online, and on our mobile apps. in overnight news a couple had to be rescued from a car that wrecked into some trees on the side of a bay area freeway. that car carried a man and his wife. veered off interstate 880 around 1:30 this morning and

got tangled up in dense bushes and trees along the fence like. this is just past the exit. >> we are unsure what witness described the vehicle as suddenly looking as if it was committing the -- it was exiting the freeway. >> the car did hit the fence at full freeway speed. we don't know the extent of their injuries but we are told the man who was driving suffered a head injury. he wasn't able to talk to rescuers. his wife was able to communicate with them. this crash is still being investigated. san francisco police are investigating a homicide in the bay view district. a man was shot to death last night on osceola lane. it happened at 10:00. the victim was jesus 18 years old. police say a friend took the victim to the hospital and that is how investigators found out about the shooting. they are still in facing the shooting and -- investigating the shooting and looking for suspects. a man is in custody after

domestic charges. this happened on nob hill. officers responded to reports of a domestic dispute but kept their distance when they determined the suspect might have a weapon. after about four hours the man surrendered peacefully to authorities. >> i stopped there and went to another place to eat. and i was going to come back. but i didn't know this was going to happen. >> streets reopened at 11:00 last night. the case remains under investigation. it was a wet and soggy saturday and more rain could be on the way. the storm also brought cold temperatures to many parts of the bay. holiday shoppers had to pull up their umbrella, hats, and coats. in san jose workers at an emergency shelter said dozens of people filled their beds because of cold weather. and the wet weather is expected to stick around through

tuesday. let's take you outside for a look at the golden gate bridge this morning. looks like it's moving pretty smoothly. not a lot of people out on the road. we can see both towers. but it looks good and checking around the bay area at the roads no major problem to report. mark tamayo joining us with your forecast. yeah today will be the better day to be outside compared to yesterday. saturday is very cold. we had the rain approaching the bay area today we still have cloud cover out there. we cannot rule out the chance of drizzle or few spotty showers. but temperatures this morning when you step outside the door it will feel warmer compared to yesterday. these numbers right now almost matching the highs. matching the highs from yesterday. look at the 40s. right now santa rosa reporting fog. 45 san francisco. as far as the bigger perspective here on the satellite and radar the organized rain is up to the

and welcome back to mornings on 2. all morning long we want to bring you these pictures. these are the victims of the sandy hook shooting as the nation remembers their lives and mourns their loss. the mother of a brave teacher at sandy hook named katelyn told crews how her daughter saved the lives of 14 children. >> she told all the kids to get in the bathroom. she shut her door. she turned off the lights. she tried to block the bathroom door a little bit. and she stayed in there and asked then to be quiet. she had to do this. to save herself and those kids. >> the 29-year-old teacher didn't let anyone out of the bathroom until police slid their bathrooms under the door to identify themselves. police investigators say the dead gunman left no note. authorities are trying to piece together why he did it.

those who knew adam lanza described him as a loner. a teacher said he didn't feel emotional or physical pain. former classmates were told he had asperger syndrome. he lived his mother. >> the whole family is traumatized by this event. very sad. >> it's not clear why adam lanza targeted sandy hook elementary. he attended the school as a boy. police say he shot and killed nancy with one of her five guns and took three of her weapons into school. all of those guns were registered. federal sergeant agents are pushing forward with their investigation. they are checking dozens of gun

stores and shooting ranges in connecticut to chase leads they hope will give insight into the life of shooter adam lanza. investigators want to know why lanza's mother kept such high powered weapons at her house and what type of experience lanza had with those guns. some people in the bay area say the connecticut tragedy inspired them to get rid of their guns for good. people lined up in okay oakland yesterday for a gun buy back program. police departments teamed up with a group called youth uprising and a private donor to offer $200 a gun. south bay authorities have arrested a teenager in connection to a bomb threat that shut down two cupertino schools. investigators took a 16-year- old into custody friday night. classes were canceled on thursday after graffiti at another school threatened a teacher at monta vista. sheriffs deputies searched that school but didn't find that school and classes did resume the next day. now on to the fiscal cliff.

house speaker john boehner has reportedly offered to raise income tax rates for millionaires. the president however wants to raise rates for those earning more than $250,000 a year. there is no deal yet but boehner's move is seen as a sign of progress. mother's against drunk driving are moving forward and getting the support they need to stop drunk driving accidents. the national transportation safety board just approved recommendations calling for all convicted drunk drivers to get an ignition interlock device in their cars to prevent them from driving drunk. the program is called the driver alcohol detection system for safety or d.a.d.s.. >> to be able to detect how much alcohol is in the driver's system and if they are at the illegal level of a .08 or above then the car won't function. >> the time between thanksgiving and new years day has the highest instances of

meeting earlier this month. the city is expected to get a report tomorrow about questions brought up during that meeting. the list of concerns include airport safety lights. a recent plane crash near the proposed site and rising sea levels. the golden state warriors on a role as they finished 7:the seven-day road trip with a loss. they beat atlanta with a -- with a majority of those wins from away games. giving them the second best road record. no bay area team is more accustomed to winning than de la sal high school. he won his 399th game leaving the spar tons to -- spartans to their fourth division championship.

the gun laws they are pretty strict but this morning the governor here is calling for stricter federal gun laws. back to you. >> thanks. time now is 8:33. people across the bay area are coming together to remember those lost in the shooting. ktvu reporter allie rasmus is live at st. mary's cathedral with more on how the church plans to honor the victims. >> reporter: st. mary's cathedral opened its door at 7:00. their first service was at 7:30. the doors will remain open throughout the afternoon for anyone who wants to come in and say a moment of prayer. now the pastor led the congregation inside in the 7:30 service in a prayer in honor in attribute to the victims of the connecticut shooting. he also told us off camera they are planning to mention the victims in the services and masses that they have scheduled throughout the cay. inside the church you are looking at a small memorial

that is has been set up dedicated to the victims of the shooting. there is a wreath, candle, and written prayer to guide people. we saw a number of people coming by and stopping there. taking a moment to say a prayer. they have noticed more people in general to come in and pray on their own. seeking solace in light of the tragedy. >> thinking about the families and their pain and suffering for the loss of their loved ones. >> the next service in the church is scheduled for 9:00 this morning. there is a couple others throughout the afternoon. no doubt the tragedy in connecticut will be a topic of discussion. not just at this church but across different faiths and various places of worship across the country this sunday morning two days after the tragedy. live in san francisco allie rasmus ktvu channel 2 news. >> no case compares to the violence of the sandy hook elementary school shooting.

all of the victims at the school were shot multiple times. the 20 student victims were only six or seven years old. the adults included the principal, psychologist, and teachers. one of the teachers was wounded. natalee hammond but she survived after being treated at the hot. the gunman fired at least 30 round magazines. investigators say he used a long weapon likely a semi automatic rifle. >> i've been at this for a third of the century and it's my sensibilities may not be the average man. but this probably is the worst i have seen. >> the medical examiner also indicated that he did not believe the victims suffered for an extended amount of time. pope benedict the xvi sent his prayers. he delivered the pope's missage -- message at a vigil saturday

night. >> i ask god our father to consul all those that mourn and help the community with a spiritual strength which industry triumphs over violence. >> stay with ktvu for continuing coverage of the deadly school shooting. we'll bring you'll the latest details as they emerge in connecticut on air, online, and on our mobile apps. just a day after that mass school shooting in connecticut another gunman gave holiday shopper quite a scare in southern california. police arrested 42-year-old marco at the fashion island mall in newport beach. this happened at 4:00 in the afternoon. police did get on the scene pretty quickly and no one was hurt but he has been booked on charges of assault with a

deadly weapon. authorities did have to send in a robot to search the suspects car for explosives as well. police decided to use that robot you can see it there approaching the car after the suspect marco told them he did did have more ammunition in his trunk. no word on what they found. there is a major break in two teenagers girls shot and killed in oakland. investigators have arrested three people in connection with the double homicide. best friends 15-year-old rakell and 16-year-old bobby were gunned down on november 25th. sources tell us one ostoses protects has con fezzed to the killings. detectives are still speaking with possible witnesses but say they are not searching for any additional suspects. it happened early saturday morning in the inner mission district. four men in a car opened fire on the teen year the

intersection of potrero avenue and 24th street. the team victim was able to walk a black to san francisco general hospital. no arrests have been made in that case. we know the name of an off duty highway patrol officer skilled in a motorcycle crash on friday afternoon. the coroners office has identified him as 38-year-old john of napa. he was a 14 year veteran officer. the crash happened when a pickup truck turned left in american canyon. the driver of that pickup said he saw the officer approaching and tried to move out 069 way but the motorcycle clipped the back of his truck and the officer died at the scene. rescuers in marin county are being created for saving a driver that plunged off the cliff. he drove his mini van off the side of muir woods road. no one could actually see the vehicle from the road. he was hurt but he was able to shout for help. a group of hikers on a nearby trail heard him and called 911.

so close to the ground and isolated. we do have a few sprinkles paying us a visit. this morning temperatures in the 40s into the afternoon hours. mostly cloudy 50-55. here's the overall weather pattern. we have this warm front offshore in advance of our next weather system. we have the cloudy conditions and also the sprinkles. next system that moves in tonight and into monday morning. for today spotty showers as cold front marchs on shore. we will increase the rainfall rates beginning tonight up in the north bay. gradually springing to the south. and our forecast model picks up on that nicely. here we are 12:00 a lot of cloud cover and the chance of a few showers and spotty drizzle paying us a visit. pretty much the same deal into the afternoon hours by 3:00. in fact the coverage could increase slightly. here is the next cold front moving on shore. this will be tonight. 10:00 we will be showing you more rainfall up in the north

shore. a new report says valley fog as declined about one-third over the past three decades. researchers analyzed 30 years of satellite data and concluded about 20% of winter days are foggy compared to 30% before. the decrease of fog is most obvious in november and december months. that brings good news to commuters but bad news to farmers who need the fog for their robs. this week city leaders will consider a proposal to ban surveillance drones. the proposal would establish a no drone zone in berkeley. supporters are worried the aircraft could be used to spy on residents and says this would prevent law enforcement from using them. this comes a week after alameda county tabled a decision by the sheriffs department to spend more than $31,000 for a grant. happening now we want to take you out to newtown, connecticut where investigators are holding a press conference for an update on the sandy hook elementary shooting. let's listen in.

>> but i can tell you i have recovered evidence. we have recovered some evidence. it's being processed. the weaponry involved. we are pushing all the way back to the workbench. and every bit of information regarding every weapon is also being examined and looked at with our federal partners. in addition, the examination by the officers is ongoing. hopefully we'll be able to release actual information on the last in this case. i don't have details on that. i know it's being put out via washington.

the school the building itself is being worked on. remember i told you we had a secondary crime scene of the exterior of the school. our detectives have every one of them searching every one of them. we are beginning to release those back to their owners. slowly but surely we're beginning to complete the exterior part of the crime scene. the governor and lieutenant governor are on site that have been actively involved. one thing that is becoming somewhat of a concern and that is miss information is being posted on social media sites. there has been miss information coming from people posing as the shooter in this case, posing using other id's. mimicking this crime and crime scene and activity that took place in this community.

there has been some things in somewhat of a threatening manner. it is important to know that we have discussed with federal authorities that these issues are crimes. they will be investigated statewide and federally. and prosecution will take place when people are identified. again, all information relative to this case is coming from these microphones and any information coming from other sources cannot be confirmed and in many cases it's been found is inaccurate. so i simply that is the newest twist today we want to make sure is perfectically that social media websites contain information to this case are not being posted by the connecticut state police are not being posted by the newtown police, are not being posted by any authorities in this case. so any of that information and

people that are putting that information up there in any manner all right that can be construed as a violation or state or federal law will be prosecuted. questions? i can take a few. we are still active in this case. >> you have a very specific timeline of how this event happened? i wonder if you can confirm that timeline that is now being reported in great detail? >> very good question. i found the only one speaking about this case to every member of the media. i cannot restate i have not and will not put out a timeline in this criminal investigation as it is under way. it is inappropriate, we will not do that. any sources that are putting out any kind of information like that does not come from the official investigating agency which the connecticut

state police assisted by the newtown police department. we will not put that out as the investigation is ongoing. i have not read it. but we have not put out any time line information. >> you have said that there were two places you thought. can you confirm that -- >> we are hearing from lieutenant vance of the connecticut state police. he is bringing reporters up to date in the latest. they are tracing the weapons involved in the shooting all the way back to the workbench in which they were assembled to get a sense of how they came to be involved in the shooting. lieutenant also indicated that they are still under going a medical examination of the last two victims and expect to have more details about that coming up at some point in the coming hours and days. the lieutenant was very forceful as we heard talking about a concern of

misinformation in this case. untruths he said being put out on social media and his concern that that is confusing some of the facts in this case. he also said he's not looking to release a timeline of what happened in the shooting until more investigation is done. stay with ktvu on this we'll be bringing you more details throughout the day online and in our 5:00 show later on today. a dispute between hospital administrators and nurses union is at the heart of a suspected strike by thousands of registered nurses. the walkoff will happen at nine hospitals. nurses and x-ray technicians represented by the california nurses association will start the one-day strike on chrimas eve. they are upset about staffing levels, health benefits, and sick days. time now is 8:52. secretary of state hillary clinton will not testify at a hearing this week about september's benghazi attack. what is keeping her from attending that important meeting. we are tracking more clouds once again this sunday morning.
